Rookie pacer Mohammed Siraj starred for Sunrisers Hyderabad in their must-win game against Gujarat Lions. Hyderabad beat Gujarat by eight wickets to qualify for the playoffs at the Green Park, Kanpur on Saturday.Siraj took 4/32 from his four overs to help Hyderabad bowl out Gujarat for a mere 154. Gujarat were at one stage 111/1 in 11 overs. His heroics was followed by an unbeatensecond-wicketpartnership of 133 runs between David Warner (69*) and Vijay Shankar (63*) to help SRH earn an easy victory.Earlier, Ishan Kishan and Dwayne Smith provided the home team with a fantastic start as they were cruising along at 111/0 from 10.5 overs before Rashid Khan removed Smith for 54.Siraj, who has been a hit in this year’s Indian Premier League due to his pace and skiddy bowling, has constantly troubled the batsmen in all the five matches he played before this one.Although, he had been expensive in his first spell today, giving away 22 runs from the first two overs, the Hyderabad pacer didn’t disappoint his captain when he was called up for the 13th over. He picked up two wickets in the over and gave away just two runs.Siraj first got the dangerous Kishan with a slower delivery. The Gujarat youngster went for the big hit and could only slog it high up in the air, holding out to Naman Ojha. Siraj followed it up with another important wicket of Suresh Raina, who held out to Shikhar Dhawan at deep backward square. He returned to bowl the 17th over and got two in two, cleaning up James Faulkner and Pradeep Sangwan off his last two deliveries.advertisementThe 13th over turned out to be a match changer as post that, Gujarat kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rashid and Bhuvneshwar Kumar along with Siraj kept it tight. The Gujarat batsmen failed to handle the Hyderabad pacers, who were bowling with some steam. Six batsmen were bowled out in the first innings, which is the most this season and the second highest in all seasons.Siraj was a happy man after his brilliant bowling and also thanked the senior players for helping him.”I’m happy with my performance. I’ve learnt a lot from the senior players in the team,” he said.Talking about the important wicket of Kishan at the crucial juncture, he said that he was just looking to vary his pace.”I was just looking to change my pace because there was no help from the wicket and it worked for me,” he said .He also sounded a confident man when Sanjay Manjrekar asked him about his captain’s faith on him.”I’ve proved myself whenever I’ve been given the ball…hence the captain has shown confidence in me,” he said. The 23-year-old, who took 41 wickets from nine matches for Hyderabad in this year’s Ranji Trophy said his domestic form helped him.”I took 41 wickets from nine games and I’ve carried that confidence from the Ranji Trophy to IPL 2017,” said the Hyderabad pacer. He was awarded the Man-of-the-Match for his brilliant spell and said that bowling with Bhuvneshwar and Kaul helps him.”I liked my 4th wicket the most. The wicket was a bit slow so I cut down the pace to prevent runs. It helps a lot to bowl with Bhuvi and Siddarth Kaul. Bhuvi keeps advising on where to bowl to which batsman,” said the 23-year-old.Siraj, who was bought for a whopping Rs 2.6 crore by SRH after his brilliant bowling in the domestic circuit, has only played six matches in this year’s IPL, picking up 10 wickets so far. Coming from a lower middle-class family, it was hard for him to make a mark in a cricket crazy nation but his father’s confidence on him and his persistence has made him what he is today. The right-arm pacer stood up in one of the most important games this season fro Hyderabad as they look to seal a playoff spot today.
