Tesoro Settles with EPA for Clean Air Violations

first_imgVia email, Executive Vice President of Operations Keith Casey wrote, “We take compliance with environmental regulations very seriously and are pleased to have reached agreement on this Consent Decree that allows us to fully implement the required procedures and investments to further improve our environmental performance.” The settlement also includes a $10.4 million civil penalty and $12 million for project in communities where the air was affected. Last April, the oil refiner was accused of not having the correct risk management plans in place. The settlement covers the five refineries that Tesoro operates in Kenai, Alaska; Anacortes, Washington; Salt Lake City; Mandan, North Dakota; and Martinez, California. It also covers Par Hawaii’s refinery in Kapolei, Hawaii. Tesoro and Par Hawaii are now being required to control flaring and install new pollution control technology, which will reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide.
