Documents shed light on probe of UF quarterback

first_imgGAINESVILLE – The University of Florida made public police documents from its investigation of the claim by another student that Treon Harris had sex with the woman against her will. The report is 175 pages from the allegations following the team’s return home from a 10-9 win against Tennessee.A total of eight football players are named in the report as among those who were interviewed in the investigation, in which the woman first claimed she was attacked early in the morning of Oct. 6. The complaint was later withdrawn. The woman claims she lied down on Harris’ bed because she was tired, but then he forced himself on her, refusing to climb off and ignoring her pleas for him to stop. “I don’t want to have sex with you,” she recalled saying that night, according to a police report. Harris felt like a “dead weight” on top of her, she told investigators.Harris didn’t see it that way. In his initial interview with police Oct. 5, he said it all started with a kiss and didn’t recall her saying she didn’t want to have sex. “We were talking, and she did, she start kissing, we kissing each other, and like it just happened,” he told investigators, the report said. Asked to clarify what ‘it’ meant, Harris reportedly said, “We had sex.”Harris also text the woman to keep the incident private.According to the University Police report, the woman’s phone received a text from Harris’ phone that read: “Don’t tell nobody bout nothing.”The response: “And don’t try me ever again,” and, “I wouldn’t even come near me if I were yu.”While the woman elected not to pursue charges, the documents reveal some potentially damaging information about the Florida football team’s behavior at a time when Will Muschamp’s future at the school is in question. Muschamp named Harris the team’s starting QB for next week’s Georgia game. He was suspended early in the week before the LSU game on Oct. 11. He was reinstated when the woman elected not to pursue charges but Harris sat out the game anyway.Documents and police interviews reveal that many starters on the football team were at the Rain’ nightclub when it closed just before 2 a.m., the same night after the Gators had beaten Tennessee on Oct. 5 in Knoxville.Witnesses said there was drinking and “smoking’” by many of the players.last_img read more

Selection smacks of BCCI orchestration

first_imgDivide and rule is an old colonial trait that has been ingrained into Indian cricket. In the 70s and 80s, it witnessed the North-South segregation, a subject that the press and the public speculated a lot about. But the acrimony, if any, never came out in the public domain. The BCCI has had its own share of spars with broadcasters, new cricket leagues or even the contract issues in the 80s which saw K Srikkanth, the former opening batsman and current chief selector, take over the India captaincy under duress. The MS Dhoni-Virender Sehwag public spat is one that could leave impressionable scars on Team India. The team is in transition and the younger breed entering the system will wait and watch. Some will choose to be on the buttered side of the bread and some may choose to be neutral. It is apparent that Sehwag and Gambhir will be around for a while on sheer cricketing skills. The blemishes of this incident will stay for a while, if they are not wiped away through transparent talks. If the selection of the Indian team for the Asia Cup is any yardstick to dissect the locker room screenplay, then it is palpable that the BCCI has orchestrated this script.First, there was the rationale behind rewarding the only bright spark of the tour Down Under, Virat Kohli, with the mantle of being the second-in-command. Kohli’s time to be understudy should have come by design rather than default. At the moment, he seems to be a catalyst to douse the fire in the team.advertisementSecondly, the uncanny elucidation (one of the many, I might stress) by the chairman of selectors on the disparity between Gambhir and Dhoni’s age is a hollow argument. It doesn’t take one to be an Archimedes to recognise that disproportionate ages don’t change with the passage of time or preferences of the authorities. The counsel to suggest rest for Sehwag and Zaheer is again seemingly ambiguous. The selection on the threshold of a possible three-game, undeserved, final in the CB Series highlights a few issues. The apparent backstage histrionics that surfaced from the ‘rotation’ theory didn’t help team camaraderie. The subsequent lack of restraint by the protagonists at press congregations did not helped the issue. It has highlighted the otherwise strategically acknowledged theories of ‘rotation’ and the contentious ‘youth over seniors’ debate and questioned its bona fides.Dressing room moods and a team’s character are often tested in sport .The positive mood often comes from triumphs and stunning performances. Indian cricket needs to focus on these two critical issues. The rest will sort itself out. Crevices are often evident when there is a famine. The scarcity of competitive team performances is where Indian cricket’s drought is.(The writer is a former captain of the Mumbai Ranji team)last_img read more

What to do post-run to maximize your results

If you are training for a marathon this is even more important; marathon runners can lose up to 5 percent of their total body weight during the race, or around four to five liters of fluids on average. To avoid dehydration and help the body replenish its reserves, be sure to drink plenty of fluids in the hours after your run, whether you prefer water, fruit juice or sports recovery drinks. You should also avoid alcohol if you really want to reach peak performance. Not only will it dehydrate you, but celebrity trainer David Kirsch also adds that “during a wellness program there is no room for hangovers. You need to be fresh, focused, and on top of your game to achieve the desired results.”FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSBoxers Pacquiao, Petecio torchbearers for SEA Games openingGet a good night’s sleepDr. Andrew Murray, who works predominantly with runners but also swimmers and cyclists, says that the one thing they all have in common is they are “world class sleepers.” He recommends at least seven hours a night to reduce the risk of infection and stay healthy, plus a good night’s sleep is possibly the best way for your body to repair itself after exercise. Kirsch also adds that skimping on sleep “will sabotage your hard-earned workout gains,” so to get the most out of your run, as well as reach your true running potential in your next one, make sure you prioritize sleep. He recommends a protein smoothie or a proper meal between one hour to 90 minutes after your run, and nuts, seeds, and/or an apple as good options for snack until you can eat a real meal. Dr. Murray agrees, also recommending a ratio of three portions of carbs to one portion of protein within the hour after your run. Pasta or a baked potato with tuna, a chicken sandwich, eggs or pulses are all good choices.Stretch it outAlthough Dr. Murray says you don’t need to do a specific warm-up, just something to get you moving a little and ready for running, he does recommend a cool down, especially when you have done a more intense, longer run. Cooling down and stretching is a key step in any running plan to aid recovery, reduce muscle soreness and prevent injuries.Foam rolling can also be useful, not only straight after your run but also the day after and days following if you’re still feeling sore. It can also be particularly helpful when combined with stretching because it helps break up adhesions, which allows for a better and deeper stretch. The Tigers look to be in very good position to make a run at an ACC Championship, with Florida State struggling in recent weeks.last_img read more

Amended Road Traffic Act to Cover Areas to Reduce Crashes

first_img Statistics cited by Dr .Wheatley, based on those published by the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), revealed that since the start of the year, 149 persons have been killed in traffic crashes. Science, Energy and Technology Minister, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, says certain areas to be covered in the amended Road Traffic Act will aid in the reduction of fatalities on the nation’s roads. Science, Energy and Technology Minister, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, says certain areas to be covered in the amended Road Traffic Act will aid in the reduction of fatalities on the nation’s roads. These include establishment of the Island Traffic Authority and its functions, the road code, classification of vehicles; revocation of certificates of fitness; refusal of the learner’s permit or driver’s licence; and offences related to the licensing of a driver.“That is why we are vigorously pursuing the passage of the amended Road Traffic Act. The Government continues to take seriously its responsibility in creating safer roads, particularly for children and other vulnerable road users,” the Minister said.Dr. Wheatley was speaking at the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) Annual Launch of Road Safety Month, at the Molynes Road Texaco Station in St. Andrew, on June 7.The Minister called for more Jamaicans to exercise caution on the roadways.“I am urging motorists to desist from speeding, to wear seat belts, practise defensive driving and to avoid the use of cell phones while driving,” he said. The call was also extended to motorcyclists and pedestrians to exercise caution when using the roadways and to wear brightly coloured clothing where necessary, in order to increase visibility.Statistics cited by Dr .Wheatley, based on those published by the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), revealed that since the start of the year, 149 persons have been killed in traffic crashes. The figure represents a 21 per cent decline over the similar period for 2016 when 170 deaths were recorded.Meanwhile, Transport and Mining Minister, Hon. Mike Henry, said the aim of the Government is to make it “safe and enjoyable” to travel on the roads. He noted that the increasing number of people killed on the roads between the ages of 19 and 35 is “unacceptable” and it is important to pursue a decline in road fatalities.Mr. Henry pointed out that fourth- and fifth-form students from the Denbigh High School in Clarendon will be trained in the analysis of the vehicle black box.The black box or event data recorders (EDRs) are not only unique to airplanes, but can also be found in most motor vehicles. They record not only times when an airbag has been deployed, but include information on vehicle speed, throttle position, whether the brakes were applied, if seatbelts were worn, engine speed and steering angles. For his part, JGRA President, Phillip Chong, said that road safety has been a fixture of the organisation since 1990. These include establishment of the Island Traffic Authority and its functions, the road code, classification of vehicles; revocation of certificates of fitness; refusal of the learner’s permit or driver’s licence; and offences related to the licensing of a driver.
